Hydroponics
NEW HMong’s hydroponic units offer a convenient alternative during the colder months to grow produce and extend the growing season. We offer space for our program participants to grow produce as well as invite volunteers to help maintain and learn more about the resourcefulness behind hydroponics.
If you are looking for a great volunteer, learning, or growing opportunity with our units, reach out to Pa Der Lee at 920.212.1541 or paderlee@newhmongwi.org

Gardening
To reduce isolation and support the mental well-being of HMong elders, NEW HMong launched the Hmong Elder Initiative. This program creates opportunities for elders to gather, engage, and mentor others. Through a variety of activities held throughout the year, such as gardening and sewing circles, elders are able to share their skills, stories, and wisdom with HMong professionals, students, and broader community members.
Although research on HMong elders and mental health is limited, existing studies consistently show high levels of depressive symptoms among HMong elders. These symptoms are often passed on to younger generations as forms of historical and generational trauma. Positive, meaningful interactions between HMong elders and other community members—such as HMong professionals and students—help co-create safe spaces that reduce the transmission of trauma across generations. This thoughtfully designed initiative supports both the physical and psychological well-being of everyone involved.
We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to reach their full potential for health and well-being. While the HMong community in Northeast Wisconsin faces barriers—such as language and cultural differences, transportation challenges, and the enduring effects of historical trauma—we are committed to addressing these challenges together.
By offering accessible, culturally relevant resources and honoring HMong identity, values, and traditions, we believe a healthy and enriching life is not only possible but achievable through strong community engagement and connection to available resources.
